Super Bowl 2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY9GdLw2kG0&feature=relmfu

As animal lovers, we all agreed that our favorite Super Bowl ad from last night was the chunky Volkswagen dog commercial! This poor canine friend couldn’t fit through the doggy door to chase the passing car* and decided to start an exercise and diet regimen to shed the extra pounds. Here in the clinic, we cannot stress enough the importance of healthy weight for pets. According to recent surveys, a whopping 80 percent of America’s canine population is estimated to be either overweight or obese. The extra weight on pets leads to joint and health problems, and limits our pets’ freedom and mobility. Sadly, overweight pets usually tend to have a shorter life expectancy rate. The Volkswagen dog offers a great motivation for weight loss and shows how different a lifestyle a healthy pet can have. The 3 keys to safe weight loss in pets are:

1. Time

Safe and sustainable weight loss takes time; don’t expect to see drastic results in few weeks. Depending on the amount of excess pounds, the process can take anywhere from 6 months to 18 months or longer. Weight loss needs to be slow and gradual to prevent other health problems.

2. Diet

Sometimes it is enough to cut down your pet’s regular food and treats and to stop giving “people” food to pets. In some cases switching your pet over to a light or diet food is going to speed up the weight loss process while assuring that the pet doesn’t feel starved. Also, remember to always choose a high quality pet food that is rich in protein and low on fats.

3. Exercise

Adding exercise like walks to your pet’s daily schedule is going to speed up the weight loss project and add stimuli to your pet’s daily schedule. Remember to start easy: add resistance and speed slowly to keep the exercise fun and pain-free for your pet.

If you have any questions on weight loss, please don’t hesitate to contact the clinic. We will be happy to help you choose the right diet for your pet and count the amount of calories needed throughout the process. You can also bring your pet in for free weigh-ins and we have plenty of exercise tips to offer you to keep your pet on course towards healthy weight loss. There is no better day to start your pets’ weight loss than today!

*Even though an effective way to shed pounds, chasing cars exposes your dog to many dangers in the traffic. Remember to keep your dog in leash when taking him/her outside.

Dangerous "People" Foods

Holidays are approaching fast and we are sure that many of you are busy preparing delicious dishes and treats for your family. While many of our traditional holiday dishes make us happy, they can be extremely harmful to our furry family members. We cannot stress the importance of these dangerous “people” food items enough, especially when many of them are common household items and the key contributors to our delicious recipes.

The following is a list of the common food items that are dangerous to pets: chocolates, coffee, caffeine, alcohol, avocados, Macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, yeast dough, raw/undercooked meat, eggs, and bones, Xylitol sweetener, onions, garlic, chives, milk, and salt. If you have any questions regarding these items or if you think that your pet might have gotten into any of these foods, please contact us immediately.

We know that it is hard sometimes to say “no” to your special friend, put giving people food to pets is not an option. To share the holiday spirit with your pet, skip the food and spend some quality time with your four-legged friend.  Most dogs love going out for walks and cats don’t mind some extra petting time. Also, you can always give your pals some high-quality dog or cat treats. We hope that everyone has a wagging good time while preparing for Holidays!

Thanks to My Pet 2011

Rockhill Pet Clinic’s annual “Thanks to My Pet” Foodraiser is on full-speed! The clinic is accepting dog and cat food donations, as well as gently used items, like towels, blankets and toys. “Thanks to My Pet” has raised thousands of pounds of dog and cat food for local animal shelters in previous years and this year we are hoping to set a new record. Rockhill will be accepting food donations until mid-December.
